Pupsicles are one of the best forms of enrichment we can offer our dogs. They are fun and easy to make, but you can also store them in the freezer for months! A cold treat on a hot summer day is exactly what your dog is begging for. Keep reading to find out 3 pupsicles recipes for your dog that are healthy and safe.
Using the blender to mix up ingredients is a great way to make many pupsicles at one time. Simply add their favorite fruit, yogurt, and a fun flavor such as peanut butter or honey. Make sure that the peanut butter is free of xylitol because it is a fake sugar that is extremely toxic for dogs. You can plop the smoothie in small paper cups, a large dish, or Kong toys to make it last even longer. Feel free to add bones on the top or little beef stick treats!
For a more savory approach to pupsicles, try this frozen soup recipe. You can use bone, chicken, or beef broth as the base and add in whatever vegetable they like the best. Always remember that less sodium is better when it comes to canned food, and wash all produce that is raw. Once all of these ingredients are mixed up, pour into ice cube trays, a large dish or popsicle molds. This recipe isn’t the best for Kong toys because it will fall through the holes.
Finally, you can make your dog any kind of ice pupsicle. Just add water and their favorite treats, vegetables, fruits, and peanut butter or honey! You can get pretty fancy with these, but your dog will just be happy to try another frozen treat. Pour water into the molds or cups and drop in your chosen ingredients. For example, you could combine sliced banana and chopped strawberries, and finish with a dollop of peanut butter on top.
For dogs that have sensitive stomachs or may be smaller, test these pupsicles recipes in small amounts to prevent diarrhea. You can try out many different fruits and vegetables; some dogs will not like the more bitter foods like raspberries or green beans. If you find that your dog is struggling after a couple of tries, just create a pupsicle out of soaked kibble and water!
