What Happens If You Don’t Brush a Dog?

Brushing is a very important part of the care routine for canines. This may be required weekly or daily, it just depends on the breed of dog. Think about how many times you brush your hair every day. Your pup’s hair or fur needs attention too! Here are some potential mishaps that may happen if you don’t brush a dog.

Mats & Tangles

Dogs with long, silky hair and thick coats tend to develop small tangles, which can turn into mats. The tangles can simply be brushed away if you keep up on a regular grooming routine! Tangles can also get stuck in tree branches or bushes and tear, causing the dog a lot of pain.

If you don’t brush a dog and are not diligent with removing the tangles, overtime the mats attach so close to the skin that they need to be shaved off carefully by a veterinarian. An uneven shave can make them look pretty funny and will also expose their skin to external environments such as weather and parasites. Remember to never use scissors to remove a mat, because many owners end up cutting the skin underneath as well.

Overlook Skin Issues & Parasites

No matter what the season is, dog should be on flea and tick preventative medicine. But, despite your best efforts, you may still come across stray parasites while brushing your dog. The brush can help you see deep down into a double coat exposing any bugs your dog may have picked up during its daily outdoor adventures.

Brushing your dog regularly also allows you to see skin issues such as mange, hot spots, or a skin infection caused by an allergic reaction. Any redness, swollenness or open wounds need to be seen immediately by a veterinarian.

Increased Shedding

Dogs will actually shed more if you don’t brush them more often. Brushing gets rid of dead hair and skin, making more room for healthy hair. If you find that you are vacuuming and sweeping fur up everyday, it may be time to update your routine. The furminator is a great tool to brush, de-shed, and clean your dog all in one.

Disproportionate Natural Oils

When you don’t brush a dog, the natural oils on the skin can build up and cause skin conditions. Brushing the coat allows the natural oils to be distributed evenly through the fur and skin. Keep a close eye on your dog’s coat, especially in humid environments.

If you want to protect your dog from any of these things, just fit a short brush in after you brush your teeth or feed the dog. If you coordinate new behaviors with something that you do everyday, you will never forget. Some dogs have fur that can shed and only gets to a certain length, but other dogs that have growing hair need to be professionally groomed around every two months. Brushing ensures quality bonding time everyday and will leave your furry friends feeling fresh, clean, and comfortable.
