If you’ve ever owned a dog that sheds you are familiar with the endless battle that comes with trying to control your dog’s shedding mane.
From brushing to baths, and countless lint rollers in between, it can be quite the task to keep your dog’s fluff from coating your black jeans. While shedding may be a reaction to your pup’s environment (a change of weather or allergies), too much shedding can be a result of a bigger underlying health issue.
It can also be a result of their diet. A healthy diet rich in nutrients and fatty acids can work to prevent excess shedding and also give them a healthier, shinier coat.
On the search for the best dog food for shedding, we discovered that making our own dog food was the key in creating a nutritious diet that helped decrease shedding.
Cheap dog food can be full of fillers that act as the equivalent of junk food in your dog’s diet. This kibble lacks vitamins, minerals and only provides calories. Just like humans, too many fillers or “junk food” in their diet can result in weight gain, digestive issues, and other problems such as excess shedding.
One way to make sure your dog is getting fed the right diet is to make the food yourself. By making their food, you take the guessing out of what is really going into their kibble. It also makes it easier to customize your pup’s food, in this case adding more ingredients that prevent shedding.
When making your dog’s food, it’s important to consider their size. This includes measuring out fat, carbohydrates, calcium, and protein so it’s proportional to their weight. Knowing how to make a well-balanced homemade diet is essential for your dog. Always consult with your vet first before adjusting your dog’s diet.
This homemade dog food recipe that helps reduce shedding, uses a combination of protein, veggies and grain which can be adjusted to the needs of your dog.
A key ingredient to reduce shedding is olive oil. It is rich in fatty acids that can decrease dandruff, calm inflamed skin and improve the health of your pup’s fur. Our recipe also contains meats and veggies rich in nutrients and moisture that help maintain the health of your dog’s fur follicle, decreasing shedding.
