Omega-3 is a powerhouse full of health benefits for humans and dogs alike. These fatty acids can help to alleviate things such as: allergies, problematic skin conditions, heart disease and arthritis. It can also support important organ functions like the liver and brain.
Omega fatty acids are called “essential fatty acids.” This is because the human and dog bodies cannot produce them alone, and they have to be consumed through supplements or foods that contain them. These sources can include fish oil, flax, chia, pumpkin and hemp seed and canola oil.
If you buy kibble, check the back label for Omega 3 and Omega 6 listed. Check to see if fish oil or fishmeal is listed as an ingredient. If the food has salmon, trout or meal variations of fish, it has Omega 3.
You can also add fish oil, hemp oil or flaxseed oil to your dog’s food. The recommended dose of Omega 3 is different for pups depending on their weight so always check to see if they are receiving the right dosage to avoid indigestion.
