Homemade Dog Donuts: Perfect Peanut Butter Dog Treats

Who said donuts are just for humans? These homemade dog donuts are the perfect morning snack for your pup.

If your dog loves peanut butter and treats (we’re thinking that is all dogs), then they will devour these peanut butter dog treats.

Natural Ingredients

These homemade dog donuts are made with all natural ingredients, safe for dogs and humans.

We prefer to use natural peanut butter – it is free of salt or added sugar. Furthermore, the whole-wheat flour used is better on our dog’s digestive system than unbleached white flour.

What is Carob Icing?

The homemade dog treats even include using carob for the icing.

Because chocolate is dangerous for dogs, carob is a natural alternative and comes from the pod of a carob tree. The pulp is what is turned into powder or chocolate-like chips.

It looks very similar to a cocoa powder but has a more roasted, naturally sweet flavor. The best part for your dog is that carob is high in fiber which helps with colon health and weight management.

Making the Dog Donuts

You can make these peanut butter dog treats into whatever shape you’d like. Just roll out the dough and cut into squares. We just enjoy making them into donuts!

Smaller sized cut outs may not take as much time to cook. So, keep that in mind when baking and check them more frequently.

Always a hit with our dogs, we have now made these dog donuts a few times. Plus, we are cheesy and enjoy eating breakfast with our dogs – so these dog donuts are an excuse for us to eat our version of donuts for breakfast.

In addition to the homemade dog donuts, we have made other homemade peanut butter dog treats and our dog was happy to sit, shake, and roll-over for them!

We first found this recipe on The Worktop and modified a few things to make it work better for our dog!

Homemade Dog Donuts: Perfect Peanut Butter Dog Treats

Course Homemade Dog Treats
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 20 minutes
Total Time 30 minutes
Servings 8 -10 donuts

Ingredients

 • For the donuts
 • 1 medium egg
 • 1/2 cup skim milk
 • 1/2 cup all-natural smooth peanut butter unsalted
 • 1 cup whole wheat flour + 2 tablespoons
 • 1 tablespoon baking powder
 • For the icing
 • 1/4 cup carob powder or melted carob chips
 • 1/4 cup boiling water

Instructions

 1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line a baking pan with parchment paper.
 2. In a medium bowl, beat the egg. Mix in the milk and peanut butter and beat until smooth.
 3. With a fork, mix in the whole wheat flour and baking powder.
 4. In the bowl or on a flat surface, knead together until everything is well combined. We ended up needing the 2 extra tablespoons of flour to make the dough stick well - you may not need though.
 5. Pat the dough on a flat surface until it is about 1/2 inch thick.
 6. Using a small round cookie cutter, cut the dough into as many circles as you can fit.
 7. Using a smaller circular cutter (we used a teaspoon to make the hole), cut out smaller circles in the middle of each circle to create the donut.
 8. Set the cut donuts on the pan. You will have scraps and can roll those out again and do another round.
 9. Bake for 20 minutes, until the donuts are dried and hard. Allow the donuts to cool.
 10. Icing
 11. If using carob powder, bring water to a boil and dump into a bowl with carob powder. Mix until you get a smooth paste. You can add water a little at a time if it is too stiff.
 12. If using carob chips, pour into a bowl and heat in the microwave in 30 second intervals.
 13. Add the carob icing into a small icing squeeze bottle or a ziploc bag and cut the tip off.
 14. Once the donuts have cooled, pipe the carob icing on top of the donuts.
