Homemade Dog Donuts: Perfect Peanut Butter Dog Treats

Who says donuts are just for humans? These easy homemade dog donuts make the perfect morning snack for your pup—especially if they love peanut butter!

If your dog can’t resist a good treat (and let’s be honest, that’s most dogs), these peanut butter dog donuts will be a huge hit. Made with natural, dog-safe ingredients, they're a fun and wholesome way to spoil your furry friend.

Natural Ingredients

These homemade peanut butter dog treats are made with simple, natural ingredients—safe for both dogs and humans (though your pup might not want to share!).

We recommend using all-natural peanut butter with no added salt, sugar, or xylitol (which is toxic to dogs). Whole wheat flour is gentler on your dog’s digestive system compared to traditional white flour, and adds more fiber and nutrients.

What is Carob Icing?

Since chocolate is toxic to dogs, we use carob as a healthy and safe alternative for the icing on these dog donuts.

Carob comes from the pods of the carob tree and is naturally sweet with a roasted flavor. It looks like cocoa powder but is high in fiber, which supports colon health and weight management for dogs. Win-win!

Making the Dog Donuts

You can shape these peanut butter dog treats any way you like—cut into squares, bones, or circles—but we love making them into classic donut shapes. They’re a fun way to “eat breakfast” with your pup!

Keep in mind: smaller shapes may bake faster, so adjust your cooking time accordingly.

These dog donuts have become a regular treat in our home, and our pups will sit, shake, and roll over just to get one. We originally discovered this recipe on The Worktop and adapted it to better suit our dogs' preferences.

Homemade Peanut Butter Dog Donuts Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 medium egg
  • 1/2 cup skim milk
  • 1/2 cup all-natural smooth peanut butter (unsalted)
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour + 2 extra tablespoons if needed
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/4 cup carob powder or melted carob chips
  • 1/4 cup boiling water

Instructions for the Doughnuts

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line a baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, beat the egg. Mix in the milk and peanut butter and beat until smooth.
  3. With a fork, mix in the whole wheat flour and baking powder.
  4. In the bowl or on a flat surface, knead together until everything is well combined. We ended up needing the 2 extra tablespoons of flour to make the dough stick well - you may not need though.
  5. Pat the dough on a flat surface until it is about 1/2 inch thick.
  6. Using a small round cookie cutter, cut the dough into as many circles as you can fit.
  7. Using a smaller circular cutter (we used a teaspoon to make the hole), cut out smaller circles in the middle of each circle to create the donut.
  8. Set the cut donuts on the pan. You will have scraps and can roll those out again and do another round.
  9. Bake for 20 minutes, until the donuts are dried and hard. Allow the donuts to cool.

Instructions for the Carob Icing

  1. Pour 1/4 cup boiling water into a bowl with the carob powder. If you are using carob chips, microwave in 30-second intervals until melted, stirring in between.
  2. Mix until smooth. Add more water, a teaspoon at a time, if needed.
