DIY Salmon Dog Treats for Training

Our dogs show us love with sweet kisses, and we often show it back by giving them one of their favorite treats. In the case of training, however, our dog does something good and we reward with a treat to enforce the behavior. In recent studies, using food as a motivator has been proven to increase response time in dogs.

This particular study found that food shortened the length of time taken to complete the response to the command. However, this difference occurred only in the early training phase and not later in the process. So, once your dog learns their new trick, you can switch to praise and pets for reward.

If you do a lot of training with high quality dog treats, it can become expensive. We like to make our dogs homemade treats, and we have yet to hear of a dog who refuses to listen for our salmon dog treats!

These treats are full of omega-3 which can help with a variety of issues such as: allergies, skin conditions, heart disease and more. Salmon is also easily digestible, making them perfect for dogs with sensitive stomachs or older dogs who are never too old to learn new tricks.

After getting a whiff of that irresistible treat smell, your dog will be begging to learn. Here’s how to craft your dog’s new high-reward training delight.

Salmon Dog Treats for Training

Ingredients

  • 1/2 can chickpeas drained
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup applesauce unsweetened
  • 1 egg
  • 1 can salmon

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

  2. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

  3. In a food processor, blend the rolled oats until they are flour.

  4. Add the salmon and blend until pureed.

  5. Add all other ingredients and blend until they are a thick paste.

  6. If you need to adjust, add water/broth to thin or more oats to thicken.

  7. Using a spoon, drop rounded ½ tablespoon sized balls on your cookie sheet.

  8. Bake at 350 degrees F for 20-30 minutes. When the bottom of the cookies is starting to brown, they are done.

These treats will be ready to use as soon as they cool. You should store these in the fridge, and if you can’t use them within two to three days, be sure to put the rest in the freezer.
